As Jesus begins to foresees his own death and resurrection, he begins emphasize the teachings of the Gospel rather than performing more miracles. Jesus speaks about divorce, spouses, and mentions the promise of the Kingdom of God. While great sacrifice is needed to enter, it all pays off. Jesus also makes it clear that loving God and loving your neighbor as you love yourself places you closer to the kingdom of God. Eventually, Jesus’s prediction of his death is met. Jesus calls his disciples to a dinner where the sacrament of the eucharist is revealed. His disciples are asked to eat and drink the bread and wine as a symbol of Jesus’s body and blood. After praying, Jesus is taken by the city’s chief priests the next morning and reveals that he is the Son of the Blessed One and Messiah. Strangely enough, it is a solider that first recognizes that the man they were arresting was the Son of God. Succumbed to ridicule and humiliation, Jesus is crucified. From my own perspective, the cross holds political meaning. Jesus’s crucifixion showed how much of a radical individual and threat he was to the domination system of the Roman Empire. The resurrection that follows three days after the crucifixion further confirms that Jesus was the person he claimed to be: The Son of God. Jesus shows how love can triumph over hate and compassion over oppression. There is no authority that can overcome Him, not even death. Upon rising, he reveals himself to Mary, Mary Magdalene, and his apostles. The word of Jesus’s resurrection is spread everywhere. His disciples are then instructed to go forth and preach the word of God, which has spread widely throughout the world as we see today. The Gospel of Mark provides Christians with a first look into the life of Jesus. Also, it shows how the teachings of Jesus are to be interpreted in different ways. It’s obvious that Jesus seems to teach in parables, but it is seen in Mark’s gospel that he does this in order to keep people from understanding his teachings in one single message. Can be the decision by patient, parent or guardian and physician to withhold or withdraw extraordinary means of sustaining or prolonging life, such as deciding against high-risk surgery for a patient dying of cancer or kidney failure. When the intent is not to cause death but rather to reject extraordinary treatment, this results in the acceptance of death or continued life, whichever occurs, but it is not true euthanasia. The terms "passive," "indirect" or "negative euthanasia" should not be used since they play into the hands of euthanasia advocates by confusing legitimate actions with euthanasia, thereby desensitizing people to the fact that euthanasia is killing. More importantly, passive euthanasia is sometimes defined by others as the withholding of lifesaving treatment with the intention and result of causing the patient's death. To determine whether an individual is an employee or independent contractor under the common law, the relationship of the worker and the business must be examined. All evidence of control and independence must be considered. In an employee-independent contractor determination, all information that provides evidence of the degree of control and degree of independence must be considered. Independent Contractor or EmployeeUnder federal and state laws, an independent contractor must be just that, independent. He or she must provide a product or service without punching a time clock or being told how to do the job. Independent contractors are described as persons engaged in occupations who contract to perform work according to their own methods, without being subject to control of the employer except for the result. Before an employer can determine how to treat payments it makes for services, the employer must first know the business relationship that exists between employer and the person performing the services. The person performing the services may be an independent contractor or an employee. Simply because an employer refers to a worker as an independent contractor or he or she has agreed to the arrangement in a written contract does not mean that the individual is correctly classified as an independent contractor. Likewise, the fact that payments are issued by accounts payable rather than the payroll department also does not mean that the person is an independent contractor. The nature of the relationship between the individual and the employer is the true determinant, and misclassification can result in serious consequences for an organization. In Mary’s case, the scenario is vague and may need a little more information in order to give an accurate assumption on whether or not Mary is a contractor or an employee. Mary was hired for a special programmer project as a contractor and just as the project was nearing completion, a new project came into play. For this new project, Mary was required to use company materials and equipment while adhering to company schedules, which makes it seem as though she was being treated as an employee. Mary, at one point being an independent contractor, has now developed a relationship with the employer, the more likely there is an employer/employee relationship,  and the tables at this point have turned. Not only has Mary been working for the company for a number of years, Mary is now working under the supervision of a supervisor, using company materials and equipment, not to mention that she now has to adhere to the company work schedules. Under common-law rules, anyone who performs services for you is your employee if you can control what will be done and how it will be done (Internal Revenue Service, 2004). Employer / Employee RelationshipThe employer/employee relationship between Mary and Little Lamb has changed over the course of time. With respect to Mary’s services, are they regularly available to the general public? They should be, and if Mary does not attempt to make the availability of his/her services known to the general public, her relationship with Little Lamb could be viewed as an employer-employee relationship. The primary issue here is who is running the ship. Does Little Lamb have the right to hire or fire, determine the wage or salary to be paid, and decide on the time, place, and manner in which the work is to be done? If so, then the employer-employee relationship exists. Also, even if Little Lamb does not directly control Mary’s activities, but has the right to do so, the notion of control still exists. Under the common-law (20) criteria test, an employer-employee relationship is present between Mary and Little Lamb Company. Employment at-willOne critical employment law issue affecting employee handbooks and policy manuals is employment at will. Employment at will is traditional common law perspective that an employee may seek work and quit at any time, and likewise, that the employer may hire and fire at any time for any reason or no reason. Employees always have the right to quit their jobs, no matter how inconvenient their departure may be for the employer. The employer’s right to fire or terminate the employee is not quite so simple and clear-cut. Some employees work under a written contract that specifies exactly the circumstances under which they can be terminated. If the agreement sets out a termination procedure, then it is a breach of contract to terminate the employee without following the procedure. Further, in states where at-will employment does exist, it is littered with statutory  exceptions. That means you cannot terminate workers if the discharge infringes on a protected right or goes against public policy (Falcone, 2004). Many employee terminations are based on a need to downsize, rather than on the employee’s individual poor performance (D. Shilling 1998). When employees are classified as reduction in force, it should be clarified that they are not at fault. Downsizing also affects a company’s public profile, and its ex-employees can become either good-will ambassadors or the complete opposite. Mary’s release was legal under the doctrine of employment at-will, providing she was an employee. Employment-at-will status does not provide employees with job security, and an employee can be fired on a moment’s notice for any legitimate reason, or for no reason at all. On the other hand, if Mary was a contractor, then Little Lamb would have broken the employment contract which would be illegal. There are five key exceptions to the employment-at-will doctrine:Employment contracts: If a contract exists, you must adhere to its terms and conditions, including notice requirement, least you breach the contract. Where an employment contract exists for a fixed period of time (for example, three years) and is silent concerning grounds for terminating the contract, many state courts have ruled that employers have an implied obligation to discharge only for just cause. Similarly, unionized employees are governed by the terms and conditions of a collective bargaining agreement-they are not at-will employees. Statutory considerations: Dismissals are illegal when based on age, sex, national origin, religion, union membership or any other factor protected by law. Potential problems arise any time you fire someone in a protected class. Public policy exceptions: You cannot terminate an employee for such activities as filing a workers’ compensation claim, whistle blowing, engaging in group activities that protest unsafe work conditions or refusing to commit an unlawful act on the employer’s behalf. Implied contract exceptions: You may be bound by promises published in your employee handbook or oral promises made at the hiring interview requiring â€Å"just cause† to terminate. In addition, you are prohibited from discharging long-term employees just before they are due to receive anticipated financial benefits (known as an implied covenant of good faith and fair dealing). Because of these limitations, you must attempt to protect the at-will employment status at all costs. And that requires regular reminders about the at-will relationship you have with employees, as well as progressive discipline (Falcone, 2004). The first and probably the most obvious aspect to his character is that of the magician. Some critics argue that the 4 main characters on the Island can be said to represent different attributes to humanity: Caliban represents instinct, Miranda represents love, Ariel represents spirit and Prospero represents power. Prosperos incredible magical powers contribute to this interpretation of his character. His character is also interpreted as being like a puppet-master. I think this is an appropriate image of Prospero as he uses his incredible powers to rule over people, influencing and controlling them with his magic for his own personal purposes. He controls Caliban with threats and acts of physical violence saying: Tonight thou shalt have cramps, side stitches that shall pen thy breath up. This shows Prosperos puppet-master side using his incredible power to control people and making them afraid of them. The author also uses the rule of three to show the extent of Prosperos threats towards Caliban. He also controls Miranda, this time though he does not resort to physical pain or violence he puts a spell on her instead. He says, Thou art inclined to sleep This again shows his incredible power he possesses as a magician being able to control peoples actions easily as a puppet-master would his puppets. I believe he does this to show off and feed his ego. Also he does this to suit his personal interests. In this way Prospero often abuses his power. A good example of this is when he stops Ferdinand drawing his sword, testing his power. He turns Ferdinands nerves back into a childs. This is shown in: Thy nerves are in their infancy. Also again he is showing off his great power as a magician controlling Ferdinand making him unable to fight back. Prospero is again shown to be extremely powerful; this time he does not only control beings but the elements themselves. He creates a storm, controlling it. He creates a storm for revenge on his brother and the king, once again abusing his power. He controls the storm so that no one is killed Not a hair perished. This again shows his enormous magical powers and ability as a magician. I believe the writer uses the storm as a symbol to show the anger that Prospero has for his brother. I also believe it symbolises the chaos and destruction that Prospero can cause. I think as a magician Prospero is extremely powerful but he often abuses this power, he uses it to control people and to gain revenge. But although this is true he is justified for wanting to gain revenge on his brother as he has been stabbed in the back and thrown from power. As well as this the audience learns there are other aspects to his character. The next aspect is that of The Father. This part of Prosperos character also has positive and negative parts to it. At times he is caring, protective, loving and concerned but at other times he is overprotective and controlling. He exploits his daughter to gain revenge and he tests his daughters feelings for Ferdinand instead of letting her find out her feelings for herself. One positive aspect of Prosperos relationship with Miranda as a father, is that he is caring. Evidence of this is seen when Prospero says Tell your piteous heart theres no harm done. This shows he is caring as he sees his daughters distress at thewreck and reassures and comforts her. He is also very protective of his daughter, which is another positive aspect of his character. He says: I have done nothing but in care of thee. However, it can be argued that Prospero uses his daughters welfare as justification for his revenge. I dont believe this is fair because I believe Prospero probably would have tried to take revenge even if he did not have his daughter. An audience also learns there is a loving part of his character. This is obviously another positive aspect, he describes his daughter as a cherubin, which gives her an almost angel like image. He says: It was thou that did preserve me. This is the kind of doting that many fathers show in their relationships with their daughters. It is obviously a good thing as he loves and cares for Miranda and just shows his affection. He shows his care for Miranda also when he tests Ferdinands love for his daughter, saying: But this business I must uneasy make, lest too light winning make the prize light. He is concerned for Mirandas feelings, which shows his love, but him interfering may show how he is overprotective. His overprotectiveness is a very negative aspect of his relationship with Miranda. But this could also be a very positive aspect to his character as it shows he loves and cares for his daughter. Another example of how he can be seen as overprotective is he has kept Miranda ignorant of what thou art. So he has kept from the knowledge of her noble past, protecting her from the public. In a way this is a positive aspect to his character as he is only protecting his daughter from what he believes will hurt her, but it is also a negative aspect as she should be allowed to live her own life and sort out her own problems. One negative aspect of his character which cant be at all positive in the sense of Prospero the father is that he exploits her love for Ferdinand which also helps him gain his revenge. Evidence of this is when Prospero says: It goes on, I see, As my soul prompts it. This shows that he is willing Miranda and Ferdinands love to last so he can exploit it to gain his revenge. Also, another negative aspect to his character as a father is the fact that he I controlling. He does not just control her actions as a normal father may, such as not letting her see certain people or disciplining her. He controls her actions physically using his powers; in one case he casts a spell: Here cease more question; thou art inclined to sleep. This is not good as he is not just misusing his powers, using them on people but he is almost taking his daughters freedom to live. He uses it to suit him and does not consider how it may hurt or affect others. So this is obviously one of the most negative aspects Prospero has as a father. I think as a father Prospero is a very loving person, which leads to his overprotectiveness. I believe he does not exploit her but he does genuinely love her. He tries to do his best for Miranda and does things he believes are in her best interests, this is a very humane part to his character. Another very humane part of Prosperos character is that of the man. When he takes of his robe (which is symbolic of his superego.) we see a much more humane side to him, we learn about his past and the reasons he and Miranda were shipwrecked. One very human aspect of Prospero is the fact that he is shown to be very foolish and naive in his past. A good example of this is when he leaves his state to his brother: and to him put The manage of my state; Also another good example is seen when Prospero says: The government I cast upon my brother. This is obviously very foolish as this is a lot of power to hand over to his brother. I think that perhaps one of his most humane aspects is that Prospero is very arrogant. He believes he is great, powerful and perhaps better than many other people. A good example of Prosperos arrogance is when he talks about his position: And Prospero the prime duke, being so reputed In dignity, and for the liberal arts Without a parallel. The way in which Prospero keeps repeating his suggests that he is very arrogant. But this is very human and perhaps Prospero is just proud of what he has achieved. Another example of Prosperos is shown when he says Alas poor Milan. He is shown to be very arrogant as he feels that the city cant be without him as their leader. His pauses that are caused by the writer who uses commas to create a dramatic caesura, emphasises his upset, which may suggest his arrogance even more so. Prospero at times is quite single minded or self-absorbed. An example of this is when he says: And to my state grew stronger, being transported And rapt in secret studies. This shows that Prospero is self-obsessed. He is described as a stranger to his state and it says rapt in his secret studies. Which in my opinion is a little irresponsible. As he is so obsessed in his secret studies it gives his brother the chance to overthrow him. Another example that shows Prosperos irresponsibility is when it says he was neglecting worldly ends. This shows he is placing his personal interests over his public responsibilities. He notices this, showing how irresponsible he is as he does nothing about this. He says I loved my booksabove my dukedom. I believe this shows he is extremely irresponsible. Being so wrapped up in his studies gives his brother the chance to overthrow him. Another aspect to Prosperos character as a man is his bitterness towards his brother overthrowing him. This is shown when Prospero says: He was The ivy which had hid my princely trunk, And sucked my verdue out ont. This is good imagery which describes Prosperos brother as the ivy which is sucking the life or power from the tree which in this case is the imagery used to portrays Prospero. The imagery portrays Prosperos brother as a parasitic plant which is living off the life of others, I think this is very good imagery as Prosperos brother id living off his brothers good work. I think this is a very human part to Prosperos character as the man as many people feel this emotion towards one another. I think this is a negative part to his character as he is doing anything by being bitter or resentful. I think that he should have tried to take action on his brother. Another very human side to Prosperos character is when he is very self pitying. It is a negative point as I believe people should not self-pity but should get on with life. An example of this is when Prospero says: Me, poor man, my library was dukedom enough. This is an example of Prospero self-pitying. The commas emphasise his upsets by creating dramatic caesuras. This again, also shows his self-obsession and shows him trying to gain sympathy from Miranda. As a man prospero is also very biased going back to the quote: Oh a cherubin, you were the only one who preserved me. This shows Prosperos biased towards his daughter Miranda. Saying that she was the only one who preserved him, whereas there were many other factors, whys Prospero was saved, Gonzalo being one of them giving Prospero the supplies he needed to survive on the island. I think as a man Prospero is a very negative character. Displaying mainly negative qualities of a human, foolishness, arrogance, irresponsibility, bitterness and also self-absorption. I think overall The man side to Prosperos character is his weakest aspect. The final aspect of Prosperos is the aspect of master of slaves. In this aspect we learn about Prosperos relationship with both Ariel and Caliban. There are many positive and negative aspects to his relationship with each character. The first positive aspect in the relationship between Prospero and Ariel, is the huge amount of respect Ariel has for Prospero. A good example of this is when Ariel says: All hail, great master! Grave Sir, hail! To answer thy best pleasure. Shakespeare shows the respect Ariel has for Prospero by writing Ariel to refer to him as great, sir. Also we see that Ariel is a very willing servant. As her enthusiasm is shown with the use of exclamation. Another positive aspect to the relationship between Ariel and Prospero is the warmth of emotion Prospero shows towards Ariel. An example of this is when Prospero says: My brave spirit! Who was so firm, so constant! When Prospero refers to Ariel as my brave spirit! the use of the word my suggests a more personal relationship between the two characters. He also uses the word brave to compliment and flatter Ariel. The strength of his emotions are emphasised by the exclamation mark once again. The final Positive aspect in the relationship between the two characters is the willingness of Ariel to help and please Prospero. An example of this is shown in: Thats my noble master! What shall I do? Say what! What shall I do? The willingness is shown by Ariels enthusiasm. This enthusiasm is shown by the use of repetition and also exclamation marks which emphasise her excitement. As well as these positive aspects there are also negative aspects. One of these negative aspects is when Prospero blackmails Ariel. He brings up her past saying: Dost thou forget? from what torment I did thee free? I believe this is quite ironic as Ariel is not completely free as Prospero now enslaves her. Another negative point in the relationship between Prospero and Ariel is seen when Prospero promises Ariel freedom but almost at a price. Thou shalt be as free As mountain winds. But then exactly do All points of my command. This is negative because although Prospero promises freedom he has still not freed Ariel but still uses his promise to blackmail her. He uses his promise conditionally, using Ariels own trust against her. The final aspect in the relationship between Ariel and Prospero is a negative one. It is the abuse that Prospero gives Ariel also bringing up Sycroax from her past. This is shown when Prospero says this to Ariel: Thou liest malignant thing! Hast thou forgot? The foul witch Sycroax, who With age and envy Was grown into a hoop? Has Thou forget her? Prospero is abusive to Ariel calling her names like malignant thing He also uses repetition to make her remember her past. I believe that Prospero is trying to appreciate where she is now. Although he is using emotional blackmail to get what he wants from Ariel. The other relationship is with his other servant Caliban. Once again there are both positive and negative points. The first positive point is that when Prospero first landed on the isle their relationship was mutually caring. An example of this is: When thou camst first Then strokst me and made much of me. This is as though Prospero treats him like a pet using the word strokst to portray animal imagery but still cares for him as an owner would his dog. A positive point in this relationship is the cooperativeness shown by Caliban when he educated Prospero as how to survive on the island. This is shown when Caliban says: And then I loved thee, And showed thee all the qualities oth isle. This shows that Caliban did have respect for Prospero. Although I am not sure if Prospero truly cares for Caliban, I believe that Prospero may be using him to find out more about the island. Once again as well as these points there are also negative aspects of his relationship with Caliban. The first negative aspect is that Prospero uses pain to control Caliban. An example of this is If thou neglecstthy din. This shows the amount of pain that Prospero is causing as you would have to be in a huge amount of pain to make this level of noise. This also shows the level of pain Prospero is willing to cause to get his own way. He rules Caliban through Calibans fear which is Prosperos final negative aspect. Calibans fear is seen when he says: I must obey. His art is of such power, It would control my dams god, Setebos, And make a vassal of him. This shows how much Caliban fears Prospero he says that his power is such that it would control my dams god. This shows that Caliban believes that Prospero is so powerful that he could even control his god, Setebos. On the whole I believe that Prospero is a hugely mixed character. I believe Prospero is very human in some ways. His human attributes mainly being seen in the aspects The man and also The father this is probably Prosperos weakest side. It shows him to be foolish and weak. But away from his human side Prospero is seen to be extremely powerful. This side of his character is seen in the aspects The magician and also Thee master of slaves. Despite having many negative aspects I believe that Prospero is not completely negative. When it comes to the aspect of The father I believe he is just overprotective. Also as The man I believe that he is just very human and made mistakes. All together I believe that Shakespeare has managed to create an extremely real character in Prospero. He is not entirely perfect but tries hard in everything he does but makes mistakes.

Indeed, taking risks may be dangerous and impacts one’s life negatively, but this allows individuals to encounter experiences that may be beneficial as it is a positive way to learn new skills and to test one’s limits and the limits of others. This is evident in both Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 romantic, musical film ‘Moulin Rouge’ and Libby Hathorn’s children’s book, ‘Okra and Acacia : The Story of the Wattle Patterned Plate’. These two texts present the protagonists and other characters taking risks such as romantic risk, social risk and professional risk. In Luhrmann’s film, Moulin Rouge, Christian takes a romantic risk by fraternising with Satine who is a courtesan and romancing the Duke because he has claimed rights to the Moulin rouge. During the scene where Christian and Satine are having private rehearsals together, the lovers are viewed in a mid shot showing their affect towards each other, is then disrupted by the intrusion of the Duke. The couple’s fast-reacted body language of the two separating form each other’s arms display the severity of the romantic and professional risks that Christian and Satine are partaking. In spite of this, this risk is worth taking as it allows the writer and the courtesan to experience love. This persuades the viewers to go and watch the film. The music which is used throughout the trailer is contemporary, modern music of the current day: songs which the audience are familiar with, for example Your Song by Elton John and Roxanne by Sting. Although the film is set at the end of the 19th Century and the images in the shots show this, the music conveys feelings and emotions which have no historical boundaries, meaning the shots and music relate to each other. The director has chosen to use these contrasting but well relating devices as it shows that peoples emotions have not changed even though music and fashion has. An example of this interesting film language is used in frames shot inside the Moulin Rouge were people are dancing, dressed in historical costumes. Over these shots Roxanne is played expressing passion and emotions of characters even more. Baz Luhrmanns clever directing influences the viewers into going to see the film by using sympathetic background music. By using familiar songs this captures the audiences attention, persuading them further into going to watch the film Moulin Rouge. The director uses different cinematic shots to vary the frames in the trailer. Different shots have different terms which are used to indicate the amount of subject/character within a frame, how far away the camera is from the subject/character, and the perspective of the viewer. Each different shot has a different purpose and effect on the audience. An Extreme Long Shot (ELS) is generally used as a scene setting shot. In this trailer, in shot 5, it shows a shot of Paris ranging from the Eiffel Tower to the Moulin Rouge. This informs the audience where the film is set making them more interested in the film as they can really relate to the place where the film was shot. Baz Luhrmann has chosen use many long shots (LS) to view characters as approximately life size i. e. corresponding to the real distance between the audience and the real screen. Long shots show a full length shot of the character from head to toe. Long shots are very popular in this trailer when the shots are inside the club and show many people dancing together. This interests the audience more as they feel involved in the trailer as the viewers enter the mind of the Moulin Rouge. The director uses long shots to introduce characters to the audience so they know what they look like. This persuades the audience to go and watch the movie at the cinema. The most popular shot in the Moulin Rouge trailer is the Medium Shot (MS); which includes variation called the two shot and three shot. A medium shot contains characters from the waist up and they are mainly used in dialogue scenes. The medium shots are frequently used in the Moulin Rouge trailer and there over 30 dialogue shots between characters. If a shot contains two characters from the waist up these are called the two shot. These often occur in this trailer when there is a narrative between characters. For example the most frequent two shots are of Satine and Christian, the lovers. These are shots which include dialogue informing the audience of the storyline. The three shot are also used. This is when a shot contains three figures. The director uses the three shots when three characters are talking for example, a three shot is used between Satine, Christian and the Duke. Here the audience feel tension and suspense as the Duke wants to split the couple up and make Satine his but the audience do not want this. Medium shots focus in on the characters actions and show the audience more clearly of the relationships between the characters making the audience wanting to go and see the film. A Close Up Shot (CUS) concentrates on either a face or detail of Mises of close up shots in the Moulin Rouge trailer are close up shots of Satines diamante necklace, Satines face and the Dukes facial expressions. These close up shots magnify the object showing the audience the importance of things, i. e. the expression on the Dukes face where he scowls and strokes his moustache, gives the audience the feeling that he is not to be trusted and he is sincere. The close up shots take the audience into the minds of the characters as people who the viewers really trust are only allowed to get that close to their face, for example Satines loving face as she gazes at Christian. The director uses a close up to make the audience feel comfortable or uncomfortable about characters. A close up of the Duke makes the audience feels tense and hatred towards him, compared to the loving, protective relationship between Satine and the audience. These close up shots influence the viewer more to go and see Moulin Rouge as audience develops strong relationships towards characters. The director has chosen to use extreme versions of the close up shot which magnifies on a part of the face i. e. eye. These shots are known as Extreme Close Up Shots (ECUS). In the 53rd shot the director uses an extreme close up on Satines eyes focusing the audiences attention on to them. The audience are allowed to wander further into Satines mind increasing the feeling of care between Satine and the audience. The audience become involved in the film as they now feel they know Satine like a sibling as the extreme close up develops the emotions of the audience. By doing this the viewers feel even more persuaded to go and see the movie where they can find out what happens in Satines life at the Moulin Rouge. A trailer is a montage of shots which persuades the audience to go and see the film which is being advertised. A major part of the trailer is how the shots and frames have been put together. This is known has editing. Editing is a term used to describe the process of looking at all the footage which has been shot during the making of the film, placing it in a desired order and then joining it together. Editing consists of two major parts: the speed of editing i. e. how long does a shot last? The style of editing i. e. how are the shots joined together? The Moulin Rouge trailer consists of around 120 shots most of which are set inside the Moulin Rouge. The speed of each shots relates to the situation being portrayed and the background music which is playing. The tempo (speed) of the editing shots for the Moulin Rouge trailer starts reasonably slow, with each lasting about 2 to 3 seconds as the characters are introduced and the synopsis of the storyline begins. The speed of editing relates to the rhythm of the particular background music being played over the shots. The first montage of shots shows Satine and Christian meeting and how their love for one another develops whilst your song is played linking the shots together. The audience are meant to feel relaxed and sense the love between the couple growing as a romantic slow song is played linking the shots together. The speed of editing increases around the 67th shot where the Duke is intervening and meddling in the couples relationship. Here the background music quickens. The rhythm becomes faster and more random creating an atmosphere of tension and suspense for the audience as the couple begin to fall apart because of the Duke. Here the speed of editing increases to about 1 second per shot as the tension mounts. Will the couples love resist the evil Dukes temptations? This makes the trailer more interesting for the viewers as they are left with unanswered questions about the characters meaning the trailer has been successful, as the audience need to go and see the movie so their questions can be answered. By using background music with a strong rhythm it makes the speed of editing more noticeable so the audience feel these certain feelings. The second part of editing is how the shots have been joined together to create a 3 minute trailer for Moulin Rouge. The most frequent and popular style of editing is the straight cut were one frame is joined to the next straight on. The director must be able to combine shots without distracting the audiences attention from the images and narrative on screen. Baz Luhrmann is successful in doing this with straight cuts as well as with other styles of cut. At the end of this trailer the finally screens are the credits (names of actress and actors) and then the screen fades to black meaning that is the end of the trailer. This method is called fade-out. This style of editing is used to signify to the audience that something tense is about to happen or has just happened, or that the trailer has ended. This leaves the audience in suspense so they have to go and watch the Moulin Rouge. In the tenth to eleventh frames these are joined with a dissolve cut. In the tenth shot it shows the inside view of the Moulin Rouge club. Then the eleventh shot, which is a shot of Satine standing on the stage, is slowly brought in beneath the other image. A dissolve cut blends shots together without the audience noticing them. The director uses dissolve cuts to join shots together to add a variety of different styles of editing to the trailer, to make it more interesting to watch for the audience. The director has chosen to use a jump cut to draw the audiences attention onto an object very suddenly. Baz Luhrmann uses a jump cut when focusing the viewers attention onto Satines diamond necklace in a blue velvet box. It is a quick shot but the audiences attention is brought into focus very quickly as the Diamonds sparkle in the light. This is significant as the jewellery is a present from the Duke to Satine, who the audience know this is unusual as Satine feels tense around him. The director does this to influence the audience by suggesting the Duke is buying Satines love with the necklace. This makes the viewers detest the Duke even more. By using a variety of different style editing methods this makes the trailer more unique, persuading the audience to go and see the film.
